Yes, You Really Can Have Both
There’s a common assumption that underfloor heating only pairs well with hard flooring – tiles, wood, stone. But that’s not quite true. With the right carpet, you can enjoy warm floors and soft, natural texture underfoot at the same time.
The key is choosing a carpet that lets heat pass through easily rather than trapping it – which comes down to one simple measure: tog rating.
What Tog Rating Actually Means
Tog rating measures thermal resistance — how much a material insulates rather than lets heat through. It’s the same scale used for duvets, just applied to flooring. A high tog carpet holds onto warmth, which is great for cosiness but works against an underfloor heating system. A low tog carpet allows heat to rise through more freely, so the room warms up efficiently.
As a general rule, the combined tog rating of your carpet and underlay should stay below 2.5 for underfloor heating to perform well.
